October 31, 2011: Our thoughts and prayers are extended to NHS Class of '68 classmate Johnny Weaver and his family in the recent loss of their beloved:
Joseph Cline Weaver| Visit Guest Book Funeral service for Mr. Joseph Cline Weaver, 87, of Nacogdoches, Texas, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 29, 2011, at Laird Funeral Home with Dr. Allen Reed and Rev. John Withem officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Mr. Weaver was born January 18, 1924, in the Shady Grove Community in Nacogdoches, Texas, on the family farm (which had been in the family since 1861) to the late Samuel Claiborn and Mary Ella Humphreys Weaver. He and his wife still resided on this farm. He passed away peacefully October 27, 2011, in Nacogdoches. He and Maedelle Huckaby were married August 30, 1946, in Austin, Texas, while he was in the service to his country. They were married 65 blessed years. He was a graduate of SFA Demonstration School and Stephen F. Austin State University. He taught school for several years at Cleveland and Martinsville. He was an ordained deacon in the Baptist church, with current membership at First Baptist Church in Nacogdoches. Cline is survived by his loving wife, Maedelle Huckaby Weaver; two sons, Johnny Weaver and wife, Sue, and Joseph "Joe" Weaver and fiance, Deborah Cuthbertson, all of Nacogdoches; one son-in-law, Keith Matthews and wife, Pat, of Portland, Texas; two brothers, Loy Weaver of Grand Saline, Texas, and W.T. Weaver of Nacogdoches; one sister, Juanita Tomassini of Suisun, California; six grandchildren, Shelley Weaver Sears and husband, John, Casey Weaver of Katy, Christopher Matthews and wife, Cassi, of Fort Worth, Randy Weaver of Houston, Clay Matthews and wife, Danielle, of Walland, Tennessee, and Lucas Weaver of Nacogdoches; five great-grandchildren, Gavin Parker and Austin Sears of Katy, Brooklyn and Kennedi Matthews of Fort Worth and Cruze Matthews of Walland, Tennessee. Cline was preceded in death by his parents, Claiborn and Ella Weaver and his daughter, Patricia Weaver Matthews. January 27, 2011: The NHS Class of '68 extends our thoughts and prayers to classmate Kathy Baker McGough and her family in their recent loss:
Dallas Olen Baker| Visit Guest Book Dallas Olen Baker, 89, the youngest of five children, born to Emma Covington Baker and Amaziah Eugene Baker November 30, 1921, in Chireno, Texas, died Sunday, January 23, 2011, in Nacogdoches, Texas. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2011, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel with Bill Sherrill of North Street Church of Christ officiating. Interment will follow at the Lower Chireno Cemetery with full Army honor rites from Fort Hood Army Base and the local VFW Post 3893. The Patriot Guard Riders will stand tall and silent as they honor Mr. Baker with a flag line, both at the funeral home and at the cemetery. Dallas attended school in Chireno through the eighth grade, and then in order to work out for football started attending school in Nacogdoches, where he eventually became captain of the football team and president of the Nacogdoches High School senior class in 1939. Dallas attended Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College, until the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Upon hearing that his country was at war, Dallas never went back to class. On the 13th of December he boarded a train to Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, thus beginning his military career, which lasted 27 years. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served as radio operator on B-17 and B-24 aircraft in 1942. From 1943 to 1945, after commission at officer candidate school, he served as platoon leader and company commander in engineer combat battalions in England, France, Germany and the Philippines, until the end of World War ll. In direct contact with the enemy in the Philippines in World War II, and with the North Koreans and Chinese in 1952-1953, Dallas relied on the Holy Spirit to guide his path and resolved to live in a way that would help his children and grandchildren to find salvation. After evaluation of his performance of duties on a one-year competitive tour, Dallas was selected for a regular Army career and served as company commander and battalion commander in the Korean War. He held command and staff positions in the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions and was on the contingency planning staff of the XVlll Airborne Corps from 1950 to 1963. His children had their fondest military memories of their years spent in Fontainebleu, France, from 1956-1960. Dallas was awarded two Bronze Stars for Meritorious Service in Korea and for Cold War Service. During his stay in France, he received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Maryland in Germany with a major in military history of the United States and in military command management. From 1963 to 1967, he served as assistant professor of military science and taught military history and tactics in the ROTC department at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. From 1967 to 1978, he was second basic training battalion commander at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Dallas retired from the United States Army as lieutenant colonel of infantry in 1968, when he finally came home to Nacogdoches, Texas. During his years in the U.S. Army he received the following medals and commendations: Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Bronze Star Attachment, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal and Japan Clasp, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star Attachment, Korean Service Medal, Expert Infantryman (Rifleman) Badge, Philippine Liberation Service Medal, Honorable Service Lapel Button World War II, Glider Badge, Parachutist Badge -- Master. Dallas loved making parachute jumps, especially on tactical exercises when hundreds of chutes could be in the air at the same time. He was taught to fly an airplane while stationed in Fontainebleu, France, by French and German pilots who did not speak English. He later bought and flew three single-engine aircraft, including a new Mooney 201. He traveled on business and pleasure for sixteen years and qualified for multi-engine rating and as an instrument instructor. He flew jump aircraft for the Sky Divers Club at Oklahoma State University and served as a commercial pilot with airport operators in Oklahoma and Texas. From 1968 to 1970, Dallas was personnel director for Lone Star Products in Nacogdoches, and from 1971 to 1982, he was a real estate broker and an oil and gas landman with his son-in-law, Byron McGough. During the period 1984 to 1992, Dallas wrote articles published in newspapers in Pittsburg, Mount Pleasant, Longview, Gilmer and Winnsboro which were comments on local, national and world affairs. He also produced and served in a 30-minute weekly cable television program at 7:30 p.m., just before Monday Night Football. This program called "Pittsburg Notebook," was made up of local and visiting leaders being interviewed to discuss local and world events. Dallas met Betty Jean Savage of Collinsville, Illinois, April 9, 1942, while he was stationed at Jefferson Barracks in Scotfield, Illinois. They were married 37 days later and shared the next 37 years, until her death May 30, 1979. They had two children: Tommy Joe Baker and Kathleen Mary Baker. Kathleen married Byron McGough, and they have two children: Lori and Adam. Lori is married to Chris Harkness, and they have three children: Christopher, Chandler, and Hannah. Adam married Lacy McGough, and they have two children: Noah and Cooper. Tommy married Judy Baker, and they had three children: Dallas Joe, Dana and Jessica. Dallas is married to Kara Baker. Dana married Kyle Ezer, and they have one daughter, Reagan. Jessica married Craig Hughes, and they have one son, Eric. Tommy died in 1991, and Judy remarried Monte Geddie. In June 1981, Dallas married Charlotte Spencer of Pittsburg, Texas, and they worked together in her antique furniture business, traveling to England many times before finally settling in Tyler, Texas. Dallas took care of Charlotte as she learned to deal with her blindness that occurred in 1994. She survives him. Dallas was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Eugene Baker and Thomas Lee Baker; and two sisters, Imogene Clarice Baker Williamson and Lois Comal Baker Gee. Dallas loved his four nieces, Emily Hester Morrison, Susan Crawford, Lois Lacy and Jeanne Williamson, and his four nephews, John Olen Baker, Dan Williamson, Charles Gee and Bill Gee. When asked about what should be said in his obituary, he once replied, "He was here, and now he's gone." In keeping with his military background, his tombstone in the Lower Chireno Cemetery has the words "At Ease" inscribed at the top. He will be buried next to his first wife, Betty Jean. Dallas was a good husband and father, a courageous soldier in battle, a fierce yet compassionate leader of his own troops, a dedicated teacher, a true gentleman and a devout Christian who went down on his knees at his bedside for prayer every night of his life. He was an accomplished writer, a talented speaker, a gifted poet and a songwriter. He was always the life of every party, with his quick wit. He loved to sing and to dance, and he was the No. 1 fan of his daughter and her singing. Memorial donations can be made to the Lower Chireno Perpetual Care Fund, P.O. Box 62, Chireno, Texas 75937. Coach Hale will always be in our memories. Mr. Gean Burnett Hale, 89, of Nacogdoches, passed away Saturday, February 13, 2010 in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was born October 20, 1920 in Crockett, Texas, the son of Oscar Burnett and Nova Rebecca (Goodwin) Hale. January 7, 2010: Happy New Year everyone. Now that the winter holiday season is over, here is hoping that 2010 is a prosperous and joyous year for the NHS Class of '68. Our plans for informal gatherings has gotten off to a slow start; just a handfull of classmates attended the first two attempts. But those committed to these events will push forward during the upcoming months to promote gatherings (cause we like to party; even now) that you can hopefully attend; for this is our quest, to follow that star--no matter how hopeless, no matter how far. To those who have not joined us, you missed some delightful discussions. For those that were so in favor of such gatherings and have not held true to your commitment to attend, we still "luv ya".

Mary Evelyn JohnsonMrs. Mary Evelyn Johnson, 82, of Nacogdoches, passed away Saturday, October 17, 2009, in Nacogdoches. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 22, 2009, at the Laird Funeral Home chapel in Nacogdoches with the Rev. Don Ansohn officiating, and burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Mary was born on March 30, 1927, in Salmon Switch, Texas, the daughter of the late John Roland and Mary Bell Kilgo Dickey. She was a self-employed business woman and owner of the Youth Shop, in Nacogdoches, a member of First Christian Church and a member of Eastern Star. She and A. L. Johnson were childhood sweethearts; they met when Mary was in fifth grade, he was in the seventh and after he was out of the military January 19, 1946, they were married. October 19, 2009: We received news from Nacogdoches today that Patsy Johnson McNew's mother passed away yesterday. She had been ill for a while. Visitation is Wednesday, October 20th from 6:00 pm -8:00 pm. Funeral Services are scheduled for Thursday, October 21st at 2:00 pm. at Laird's Funeral Home in Nacogdoches. August 27, 2009: The class of '68 learned today of the passing of our friend and classmate Rhonda Bobo Barnes. Rhonda fought a battle with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma over the past year; she lost this battle on August 26, 2009 and moved into her heavenly home to be with our lord. She will be greatly missed and forever hold a place in our hearts and minds. She is now free of pain, disappointment, a broken hip that never had the chance to heal properly, and treatments that only worked for a time. Our thoughts and prayers are now extended to Steve, Anthony and the entire family in their time of grief and sadness. |

July 1, 2009: It has been some time now since I just simply did a non-sensical announcement on the website; so forgive me for not having anything important to say. Since the reunion, we had a night out at Harlon's BBQ in Nacogdoches that convinced the male planners of the event that we struggle in organizing social events. It was painfully obvious to us that we are better at the leg work and need assistance from the "girls" in publicity. Like the song says; "Put a girl in it". So now we are faced with having an invitation to the upcoming Class of '69 reunion and making Friday night plans for a gathering of classmates who decide to accept their invitation. So, come on "gals", take the lead and we will follow.
Here is hoping that everyone is coping with the long, hot, lazy days of summer. June 7, 2009: The NHS Class of '68 extends our thoughts and prayers to classsmate John Wallace and his family in their recent loss of their loved one. Anne Katherine Yerkovich WallaceAnne Katherine Yerkovich Wallace died June 5, 2009 at home in Nacogdoches, Texas. She was born November 26, 1912 in Lackawanna, NY, to Cyril and Amelia Yerkovich, immigrants from Croatia and Serbia. Anne attended public schools in Lackawanna and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1934. During the pre-war years, she was employed professionally as a buyer of women¹s clothing for department stores in Buffalo, NY. In World War II, Anne proudly served in the United States Navy (WAVES) as an officer in the Supply Corps, attaining the rank of Lieutenant (junior grade) USNR. It was during that service that she met and married Dr. Curtis O. Wallace, Commander USNR, Dental Corps. At the conclusion of the war, they made their home in Nacogdoches, where they raised a family of four children and where Dr. Wallace practiced dentistry. Upon Dr. Wallace¹s death in 1960, Anne completed her M.Ed. at Stephen F. Austin State University and taught as an elementary teacher in the Nacogdoches public schools until her retirement in 1977. She was a parishioner of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Anne K. Wallace is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sisters May, Kay, Martha, Eve, and Helen, and her brothers Steve, Tony and Luke. She is survived by children Stephen and wife Kristine, Jesse and wife Kathy, John and wife Fran, and Millicent and husband Joe DiCicco, and grandchildren LeeAnn Thill and Andrew, Margaret, Sarah, Jonathan, David, Stephen, Anne, Christopher, Bradford and Jennifer Wallace. She is also survived by sister-in-law Charlotte Yerkovich and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to express its appreciation for years of attentive and loving care of Anne by Pearlia King, Henrietta Rison, Sherryl Johnson, Billie Edwards, Wanda Edwards, Valencia LaBrada, and by the nurses at L&C Nursing Services, among others. There will be a visitation from 5-7 p.m. Monday, June 8, at the Cason-Monk Metcalf Funeral Home, followed by a recitation of the rosary. A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by interment at Oak Grove Cemetery, followed then by a reception in the parish hall. Judy was born September 27, 1950, in Nacogdoches, Texas, the daughter of the late Jim A. and Valrie Johnson McShan. Mrs. Parrott was a member of New Hope Congregational Methodist Church and had worked as a field representative for Woodmen of the World. She was a member of WOW Lodge 210, Deep East Texas Region Antique Automobile Club of America and the Nacogdoches Alumni Association. Judy is survived by her husband, Alvin Buddy Parrott; two sons, Rodney E. Robison and wife, Tammy, of Garrison and Randy L. March 8, 2009: Betty Twomey, Dianne Amerine, Dorothy Scheehle, Edsel West, Glenn Cooper, Johnny Weaver, Kathy McGough, and Roger Davis gathered at Harlon's Bar-B-Que on Saturday, March 7, 2009. Although the group was small and we missed not seeing you there, a good time was had by all. Jack Allen Belmont Sr., 84, died February 5, 2009 in Olympia, WA at the home of his son, Jack Belmont. He was born January 12, 1925 in Niagara Falls, New York to Mary and William Belmont. He is survived by his 2 sons and daughter-in-laws, Jack and Mary Jo Belmont of Olympia, WA and Mark and Debbie Belmont of Niagara Falls, NY, a daughter and son-in-law Pam and Bobby Ayres of Floral City, FL, 3 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers, Donald Belmont of Fullerton, CA, William Belmont, Niagara Falls, NY, 1 sister, Valara Opalka of CLearwater, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 child, Bonnie Belmont, 1 brother, Roy Belmont and 1 sister, Jennette Bell. He worked for Hooker Chemical Company in Niagara Falls NY for 43 years until he retired and moved to Forestville, NY. In 1992, he purchased a home in Floral City, FL where he lived during the winter and then visited in the summers with his son, Jack, first in Centralia, WA and then in Olympia, WA. A memorial service will be held at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 5930 Mullen Road SE, Lacey, WA on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at 2:00pm. Febrauary 1, 2009: As most of you have heard by now, Rhonda Bobo Barnes is in a struggle to combate cancer. She went through several rounds of chemo with good success and then she was discovered to have cancer in her bones. Shortly after our reunion, Rhonda fell and broke her hip. It was discovered during this hospitalization that she had a new "lump" in her neck and another type of cancer was found. She began another aggressive round of chemo, along with rehab for her hip. The chemo took a heavy toll on her body and as a result she got a blood infection and had 104 fever and this round of chemo had to be stopped. The doctors have told her that her best chance of overcoming the cancers is to have a bone marrow transplant at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. It is reported that Rhonda is gaining strength each day she gets away from chemotherapy. Her family is hopeful that she will be strong enough to be discharged from Longview Regional hospital at the beginning to middle of this week. If this happens, she will go to Dallas and meet with the doctor who will evaluate her condition and determine if she is a candidate for a bone marrow transplant at Baylor. The family has asked for your prayers as they hope and pray whole-heartedly that she is accepted for the transplant. The NHS Class of 1968 is planning to establsih a fund raiser to help Rhonda and her family offset the medical cost related to her recovery. November 8, 2008: The 40th Reunion Planning Committee enjoyed lunch in Nacogdoches today for a reunion debriefing. The committee decided to keep the remaining funds collected during registration in escrow for planning of the 45th Reunion or other events for our classmates. Due to the amount of interest from our classmates in scheduling activities between reunions, the committee has scheduled another social gathering at Harlon's Barbeque on March 7, 2009; and will make plans for more activities throughout the year. It was the suggestion of the old people in the room and it is our intent to have 2-3 such gatherings every year.
On a slightly different note, our classmate Ron Raines will be performing in Dallas next month and in Houston during April 2009. More information regarding the social and Ron's performances are listed on the Scheduled Events Page. |

October 8, 2008: For those returning to the NHS Class of '68 website, you will find a transitional phase related to supporting and maintaining the website into the future. The subsciption fees related to hosting the website have already been renewed and there are plans to continue the website; well, for as long as possible. At this time, we have reached about 60% of our photo up-load capacity. As we near the maximum capacity of the photo albums, we will obviously need to remove pictures from the website in order to continue to allow additional uploads. In order to preserve images related to our past, photos removed from the website will be archieved in files that can be used for promotion of events and presentation at future gatherings. October 6, 2008: The road trip home yesterday provided an opportunity to reflect back on the events and activities leading up to the reunion finale on Saturday night and looking forward to our next gathering. A special thanks to the reunion planning committee for their outstanding work and dedication; to the Guv'Nors for honoring us with their musical talents, and Ronnie Raines, Kathy McGough, and Gray Gregson for contributing to a wonderful and fun filled night at the Piney Woods Country Club. You guys were great and the talent each of you displayed returned us to a time in yesteryear when life was much simplier and a whole lot less hectic. But most of all, to our classmates attending the reunion, the time spent in planning and organizing this reunion culminated in an unforgetable weekend that would not have been possible without you. Even as we cleared the PWCC early Sunday morning, the wheels were already turning in our minds with plans and ideas for future gatherings. Each of you are encouraged to give us your thoughts and/or suggestions for future events. Those classmates who have not registered on the website are encouraged to do so. The annual subscription fees for the website have been renewed and we will continue to maintain the site long into the future. While we struggled to locate some of our classmates based on the list provided by the NHS Alumni Association, the development of the website provided us with an opportunity to establish a data set for contact information that you can update when you move, change addresses and/or change email addresses. Approximately 325 photos have been added to the photo albums from the 2008 reunion activities. More will be added during the next few days and don't hesitate to upload any pictures you have from the reunion.

September 29, 2008: In just 72 hours the celebration begins with our social gathering at Harlon's. Then it is on to a guided tour of our old high school building (which now serves as an elementary school within the Nacogdoches ISD), a friendly round of golf at the PWCC course and the grand reunion finale at the PWCC on Saturday. For some, an early rise on Sunday; for others an attempt to block the morning sun from coming through the window and searching for a bottle of aspirin to aide in the recovery process. Now most of you are thinking that I am referring to those individuals recovering from the large quantity of alcohol consumption on both Friday and Saturday nights; but in reality, I am referring to everyone that pushes their 50 something body beyond the realm of our daily exercises by staying up late, standing, walking, swinging a golf club and dancing the weekend away. And oh yeh!!!! All that alcohol we consume! Whatever the reason, there will be new memories and new stories as we disperse back into our normal routines. Although the planning committee hoped for a larger than large turnout, we are satisfied that everyone will receive their monies worth with the activities throughout the weekend. Those of us who have spent the past 10 months in organizing and planning your 40th Reunion want to say thanks and we truly hope you enjoy the Reunion Activities. We will see most on Friday night at Harlon's, others on Saturday. Again, for our classmates who are unable to attend, check the photos section throughout the weekend and beyond for action shots of the celebration.

September 22, 2008: With our Reunion now only 12 days away; we will be providing the PWCC with a final count of attendees later this week. As the order for food and refreshments is dependant on the number of attendees, it is very important for you (if you will be attending) to contact Glenn Cooper as soon as possible. Glenn also needs to have a fairly complete list of attendees for the printing of name tags. And just as a reminder for those late registering, the cost for Saturday night is now $40.00 per person, payable at the door. For those already committed and for those late procrastinators, we will see you there.

September 15, 2008: With only 19 days left until our reunion and just another 5 days before the cost of registration is increased to $ 40.00, our thoughts are with those classmates inpacted by Hurricane IKE and our hope that everyone is okay. There are still those without electricity, having difficulty locating fuel and other essentials that we depend on for our daily activites. While the recovery is now in full swing, the total effect on the State of Texas will not be known for several weeks. The good news is that we will have tales and stories to communicate at the Reunion. Again, to those in the impact area, we hope this finds you safe and coping well. For those in the hardest hit areas, please let us know if you need anything or if we can help.

September 4, 2008: Two score and some three months ago, a group of young people walked, one by one, across an auditorium stage in acknowledgement of academic achievement and left the friendly confines of childhood to enter the unknown. Most of us have lost contact over the years with friends and classmates that we vowed to stay in touch with. Many of us wonder what ever happened to _______ (you can fill in the blank for yourself)! In just thirty days, this same group celebrates another milestone of achievement, survival of the once unknown; now parents, grandparents, and maybe even some being great grandparents, our upcoming reunion affords everyone the opportunity to renew friendships, hear the tails of yesteryear, and maybe even show how young and foolish we still are. While the "Who's Coming" webpage includes the names of a large number of our classmates, it is obvious that there are names not listed that we have fond memories of. Without doubt, there are people who for one reason or another will not make our reunion this year. August 3, 2008: The Reunion Planning Committee had a very productive meeting at the PWCC yesterday. At this time we are pretty confident that all is on track for the celebration. An invitation to the Classes of '67 and '69 have been extended and we began accepting registrations from both classes as of August 1st. With the start of the new school year just aroung the corner, the planning for the tour of our high school building will soon be finalized. If you are interested in taking this trip through time, please use the RSVP webpage to sign up.
Glenn Cooper, John Wallace, Johnny Weaver and Edsel West enjoyed a round of golf at the PWCC following the planning meeting. The 101 degree temperature resulted in everyone maintaining good hydration (Gatorade and Water was the beverage of the Day) and our final round scores closely matched the temperature. If our analogy is correct, this should correlate to a final round score in the mid-seventies when we play in October. |

July 31, 2008: Registration opens tommorrow for fellow NHS Alumni from the Class of '67 and '69. In reviewing the website tonight, we have over 4,000 hits recorded and paid registration for 44 attendees. With only 65 days left to the reunion, I am very happy to see that there are people coming to our reunion this year that I have not seen since our graduation. The 30th Year Reunion was my first following graduation. Don't ask me why, but I just didn't take the time or feel the need to attend. After attending my first reunion, I began to anxiously await the next one. As my hair has turned white and turned loose, my waist size has increased and my cholesteral level has sky rocketed, I have not lost the memory of the treasured moments spent in the Nacogdoches Public School System and the friendships of my younger years. Once again, I encourage those that are still procrastinating over whether or not to attend, please join with us in celebrating the 40th anniversary of our Graduation. Trust me when I say, you will not regret your decision. Hope to see you there.

July 26, 2008: The Nacogdoches High School Alumni Association will be hosting the 9th Annual NHSAA / Buck Fausett Golf Tournament during NHS Homecoming Weekend on Saturday, October 18, 2008. The proceeds from the tournament go to the funding of scholorships presented by the NHSAA. The tournament format consists of two-man teams and the cost is $250.00 per Team. June 23, 2008: As everyone probably knows from review of the website and as listed on the 40th Reunion webpage, the planning committee has made tentative arrangements for a tour of the old High School Building (now an elementary school) during our reunion weekend. At this time we have received RSVP's from just two or three people indicating a desire to tour the building. We will need at least 12-15 people to sign up in order to schedule the tour, and as time is running out, a deadline of September 1, 2008 has been established to have reached this number or we will abandon the planning and scheduling of the tour. This deadline will only give us a short four weeks to get everything arranged with the Nacogdoches Independent School District. If you or someone you know is planning to take the guided tour, please go to the RSVP webpage and send us your RSVP for the tour. If we receive confirmations in the number needed before the deadline, the committee will make the final arrangements with the school district and information regarding the tour will be updated on the Reunion webpage. Hello Everybody! We had a good meeting/lunch today making plans for our 40th Class Reunion! It's just SO much fun just to get to sit and be with our old classmates! And it's just a teaser for how much fun we'll all have at our reunion! We'd love help and input from all of you! We're just a group of about a dozen who are making plans, but each and every one of you are welcome to help. Remember the dates of October 3 and 4!! Friday night will just be informal fun out at Harlon's Barbeque place - some of you have never been there - it's great! June 4, 2008: Okay, I know you thought I had abandoned the website; but just when you felt a little relief, I'M BACK. The truth is that I had to take a few days to ponder and come up with something interesting. As you can see from this message, it did not work. The good news is the Planning Committee will meet again this weekend to tie up some loose ends. From the responses to Glenn's email it appears that we should have planned luncheons more often; looks like just about everybody will be there and even a few new members. Johnny Weaver has joined the committee and plans to make the June meeting. This will also be the first meeting for Cathy Schmidt Deason and Rhonda Bobo Barnes. April 17, 2008: John Wallace has completed the prelimanary arrangements for a round of Golf at the Piney Woods Country Club on Saturday, October 4, 2008. We can begin scheduling Tee times as early as 7:00 AM. There will be PWCC member groups beginning around noon that prohibit us from scheduling tee times that would conflict with them. As Tee times are limited, we must have confirmation of your plans to join our golfing group by August 1, 2008. Individual cost for Green Fees and Cart is $40.00 + tax. These fees will be payable upon arrival at the course; however, we ask that should you advice us of plans to join the group and something happen to alter your plans that you let us know as soon as possible. April 15, 2008: Happy Tax Day everyone. This communication is for shedding a little light on the monumental task facing the Reunion Planning Committee in obtaining the current mailing address for the classmates of the NHS Class of 1968. The most current list of addresses that we have for the purpose of mailing invitations to the 40th Reunion came from the NHS Alumni Association. As one might expect, a large number of the addresses and telephone numbers of our classmates have changed since the last update to the NHS Alumni Association. Through the "www" dot com, one of today's most technological advancements in communication, and the infinite capabilities of conducting reverse lookup of telephone numbers and in utilizing people locators, I have been trying to confirm addresses and current telephone numbers. I have been amazed at the number of people in our age group with the same first and last names of some of our classmates. As the purpose of conducting a reunion is to have an opportunity to see and visit old friends, the communication of planned events and giving everyone the opportunity to make an independent decision as to their attendence is paramount. Obviously, the development and publishing of information on this website is one form of communicating our reunion plans; however, in order to ensure that all of our classmates know of the upcoming reunion, it is imperative that we have current mailing addresses for as many of our classmates as possible in order that formal invitations to the reunion can be mailed. It seems at times that the reunion is a long way off, but in reality it is now only a matter of a few months. Just think about how fast the past 40 years have come and gone! Please help in dissiminating information about this website and the 40th Reunion to the classmates you have maintained contact with and encourage them to register in our classmates section. The address, email and telephone numbers collected during the registration process are not available for public view, and will only be used to assist in getting invitations out for the reunion. April 5, 2008: The Reunion Planning Committee convened at the Nacogdoches Comfort Inn today to continue with plans for our 40th Reunion activities. After tallying the total cost for the Reunion on October 4th, we agreed on a cost per person figure which is reflected in communications on the Details of Events page of this website. The committee is requesting that you use the RSVP page to confirm your interest and/or participation in each of the planned activities in order that we can begin to tabulate attendance numbers and interest in touring the old High School Building and playing a round of golf at the Country Club. We also ask that you send us an RSVP from the site when you mail your registration fees to Glenn. We will be able to send you a confirmation directly from the website when we receive your check. The NHS Class of 1968 extends our thoughts and prayers to classmate Joel Turner and his Family.

Joel Turner, 89, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2008, in Nacogdoches, Texas. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2008, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel. Bro. John Horner of Corinth Primitive Baptist Church will be officiating, assisted by Bro. Zane Coquat. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Mr. Turner was born April 7, 1918, in Gary, Texas, to Ezekiel Turner and Dora Hall Turner. Mr. Turner was a member of the Corinth Primitive Baptist Church in Appleby, Texas, and had retired from the Texas Forest Service as the Area 3 education officer. After retirement, he enjoyed working on his farm and taking care of his cattle. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and an excellent marksman. He achieved his 50-year pin from the Masonic Lodge, where he enjoyed being a member. Mr. Turner retired at the rank of captain from the U.S. Army, having serving 22 years. He saw combat during both World War II and the Korean War, received his battlefield commission from master sergeant to second lieutenant, and was involved in 17 campaigns. He was also awarded the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters. Mr. Turner married Virginia Avent Turner of San Antonio, Texas, September 5, 1942, and she survives him. Also surviving Mr. Turner are his sons, Joel L. Turner Jr. of Nacogdoches and John R. Turner and wife, Cheryl, of Las Cruses, N.M.; daughter, Connie Sue Sherbert and husband, Robert, of Cypress, Texas; brothers, John Turner of Henderson and James Turner of Marshall; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ezekiel and Dora Turner; sisters, Dorothy F. Pike and Marjorie Jones; and brother, Robert C. Turner. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29. March 1, 2008: The Organizing Committee met today at the Piney Woods Country Club to continue the planning activities for our 40th Class Reunion. Those in attendance were greeted by staff from the Country Club and given the opportunity to tour the facility during our meeting. We extend our appreciation to the hospitality and grace of our hosts in allowing us to hold our meeting at the facility. Decisions were made today to host an evening of social activities on Friday, October 3, 2008 at Harlon's Bar B Que; to explore arrangements for a Tour of the Old High School Building ; and also to arrange for a round of Golf at the Country Club on Saturday. January 28, 2008: We have received requests for publication of a Class Roster on this website. As the site is available to anyone surfing the World Wide Web network, concerns regarding the protection of the privacy of our classmates eliminates the potential of such postings at this time. Efforts to identify a means to link a class roster to the unique user-ID of our classmates is being explored and may eventually be possible. Until then, any classmate wanting a copy of our class roster may use the Contact Us page to send your requests to us. A copy will then be forwarded to you within a few days. At this time, classmate registration on this website is minimal. Therefore, the most recent copy of the roster is the one Glenn Cooper received from the NHS Alumni Association. The Organizing Committee held it's first meeting on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at the Fredonia Hotel and Convention Center (Nacogdoches Club) in Nacogdoches. An open discussion of thoughts and ideas resulted in the formation of sub-committee workgroups that will focus on accomplishing the task and responsibilities of that specific workgroup. The committee workgroups and workgroup chairperson is listed below. Charles Edison Paulk went to be with his beloved wife Elizabeth on March 16, 2010. He was born in Cloverdale, Alabama on October 7, 1923. He married Elizabeth Smith on November 7, 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Army from May 18, 1943 to April 28, 1947. He fought on D-Day, the Battle of Normandy and June 6-25, 1944. He was a very proud WWII veteran that served his country well. He loved the Lord and read the bible several times. In 1948, he and Elizabeth moved to Midland, Texas and owned the Cosden Station on Florida Street. Later he became a construction superintendent. His accomplishments were hospitals in Midland, Odessa, Ft. Stockton, Mineral Wells, Ennis and Uvalde. Other projects include Lee High School, Jane Long Elementary, the recreational center at Ft. Hood, the Science building and dorms at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, TX, Clay Desta and Dinero Plaza. He also helped many get jobs. When he retired he ran a small engine business and loved doing woodwork, gardening and coin collecting. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Smith Paulk, his sisters, Ina Abramson, Iris Simmons, Inez Sharp and two brothers, Ellis and Edward Paulk. He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Ann Paulk Wilson, grandson, Ryan Christopher Wilson and sister, Ioma Jaukkuri of Brighton, Michigan. A memorial service will take place 
A celebration of life for James E. Milstead, 80, of the Oak Flat Community in Rusk County will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Mr. Milstead's residence. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home. Mr. Milstead was born August 28, 1928, in Carthage, Texas, to the late Julia Elizabeth Whitaker and James Ernest Milstead Sr., and died Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at his residence. Mr. Milstead had resided in the Oak Flat Community for 24 years. He graduated from Nacogdoches High School in the class of 1945. Mr. Milstead served in the U.S. Navy and graduated from Stephen F. Austin State Teachers' College with a bachelor's degree and master's degree in administrative education. He served as superintendent for Laneville ISD for 12 years. Mr. Milstead loved coaching basketball. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth M. Milstead of the Oak Flat Community; son and daughter-in-law, James Milstead III and Brenda of Carthage; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne Mayes and David of Nacogdoches; stepson and wife, Bob Speegle and Tracy of Cypress; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brother and sister-in-law, Randall and Judy Milstead of Tyler. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the James E. Funeral service for John Louis Schmidt will be held 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel with Dr. Don Gregory of Westminster Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. John Louis Schmidt was born in Nacogdoches on April 28, 1925, the son of Henry P. and Bertha S. Schmidt. He died July 4, 2008 in Nacogdoches. Schmidt¹s father came to Nacogdoches from Germany in 1893 by invitation from his uncle, John Schmidt. The Schmidt family has been living in Nacogdoches since John Schmidt immigrated to the United States in 1875 and arrived in Texas in 1878. The Schmidt family home stood where the North Street Kroger grocery store is located today. Schmidt attended Nacogdoches High School and graduated in 1942. He then went to Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College and then transferred to Texas A & M University for one year. Upon his arrival back from active duty to Nacogdoches, he graduated from SFA and married Catherine Evans in 1947. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in September, 2007. While in the U.S. Army from July 1943-1946, he trained at Fort Lee, Virginia before being shipped overseas. He traveled via North Africa to New Delhi, India to serve in the China-Burma-India Theatre from 1944-1946. Schmidt was assigned to the Signal Corps and specifically with the 3147 Signal Intelligence Section as a Cryptographic Technician and Traffic Analyst. He was Honorable Discharged in 1946 as Technician Fourth Class. Schmidt worked with his father and brother in Schmidt¹s Ladies Apparel until the time of his father¹s death in 1950 and with his brother, Henry, until his death in 1986. In all, John Louis Schmidt co-owned and was a partner in Schmidt¹s for 61 years and was President of Schmidt¹s Inc. from 1986-1993 until his retirement. Schmidt was a Chairman of the Downtown Retail Merchants Association. He was a member of the Nacogdoches Junior Chamber of Commerce today known as the Nacogdoches Jaycees, for nine years. He was an active member of the Nacogdoches Kiwanis Club and had been for 40 years with a perfect attendance record of 32 years. In 1998, he was presented with the George F. Hixson Fellowship Medal in recognition of his community efforts. Schmidt was selected an Honorary Member of the Nacogdoches Key Club in May 1990 and he attended meetings. He was a Life Member of the SFA Alumni Association and a member of the Nacogdoches High School Alumni Association. John Schmidt is survived by his wife Catherine and three children; Cathy S. Deason and her husband Jay of Austin, Colorado, Dena S. Johnson and her husband Richard of Nacogdoches, and John L Schmidt, Jr. and his wife Debbie of Baton Rouge, Louisiana . He is also survived by seven grandchildren- Richard D. Johnson, Jr., Haley D. Castillo and husband Freddie, Jana J. Kimbrough and husband Jared, Jennifer Johnson, Melanie DelPercio, Jordan Schmidt and Harrison Schmidt, six great-grandchildren, Shelby Griffin, Hannah Kimbrough, Mallory Kimbrough, Warren Nelson, Ashley Nelson, and DeLono Castillo; two nieces Susan S. Poston and husband Paul; and Marty S. Taylor. John Schmidt is preceded in death by his parents, Henry Sr. and Bertha S. Schmidt and brother Henry P. Schmidt, Jr. and his wife Mildred Stone Schmidt. A special thank yo to Dr. B. W. Henderson, Dr. Richard Mau, and Dr. Dyanesh Ravindran for their special care for many years. Funeral services for Mrs. Judy Elizabeth Hale, 86, of Nacogdoches will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bill Gardin officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Judy was born in Beaumont, Texas on November 21, 1921, the daughter of the late Jefferson O¹Malie and Helen (Burnett) Lyle, and passed away peacefully on Friday April 25, 2008. In celebrating the life of Judy Hale, we want to remember the happy times. Judy was always among the first to get involved in whatever was wholesome and beneficial. Judy is a graduate of Kilgore College and while there she also obtained her pilot¹s license. This came about because our nation was in a depression and our Air Force was obsolete. Our Congress devised a program to interest young college men in aviation. Twenty boys could take the course and two girls. Judy, of course, was one of these girls. The reason this is noteworthy is because Gean also took the course to be one of the twenty boys and because Judy was his girlfriend. When our nation got involved in WWII, Gean, because of his college flying experience (influenced by Judy) entered the Air Force as a cadet. Gean received his Air Force wings, his commission and his wife, Judy, all in one package. Judy was the first captain of the Kilgore College Rangerettes and an officer in the Rangerettes Forever Alumni Association. This organization has raised enough funds that every Rangerette, present and future, will have a scholarship. Rangerettes Forever have performed with the Rangerettes on three different occasions. First, in 1988, the Rangerettes Forever performed at the East West Shriners football game in Palo Alto, Calif. Later, they marched in the Macy¹s Thanksgiving Day parade. In 2000, they also performed at halftime of the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Judy loved Nacogdoches, and was active in the Nacogdoches Historical Society. Their purpose was to preserve the history of historic Nacogdoches. Judy was instrumental in the creation of the Eugenia Sterne Park on East Main Street. During this project, she worked with Red Suspenders, a group of men from all walks of life who met annually to construct things as in the past. Thus, the gazebo in the Eugenia Sterne Park was one of their projects. Judy also bought and restored the Anna Raguet home. The Raguet family is a prominent Nacogdoches family, as a street was named after them. Anna Raguet was the girlfriend of Sam Houston, who called on her each time he visited Nacogdoches. Judy was also instrumental in the preservation of the Durst Taylor house. Judy¹s mark on our community as well as our hearts will not be forgotten. She led a remarkable life full of many endeavors and Judy touched the lives of all she came to know. We celebrate her life and accomplishments with the fervent hope that we can also have such an impact. Judy is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Gean Hale; a daughter, Rebecca Crosson and husband, Richard of Mullica Hill, NJ; and a son, Jeff Hale and wife, Sabrina of Nacogdoches, Texas. She is also survived by three grandchildren; Andrew Crosson and wife, Julie of Ashville, North Carolina, Clayton Hale, of Nacogdoches, Texas; and Samiel Hale of Huntsville, Texas; and one great-grandchild, Adelina Gean Crosson. Judy is preceded in death by her parents; her sister. Patricia Harrison; brother-in-law, Paul Harrison; and nephew, Lyle Harrison. Pallbearers: Andrew Crosson, Clayton Hale, Sam Hale, Patric Harrison, Ed Cole and Paul Drawhorn. Honorary pallbearers: members of the open door class at the First United Methodist Church.
